LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE:

So many entrepreneurs are trying to fake their way to the top.

For every Gary Vaynerchuck hot take, there is another entrepreneur trying to copy him.

However, it’s important to understand that there can only be one Gary Vee.

Entrepreneurship has its ups and downs. If you can’t find lessons in both good and bad times, it’s hard to last as an entrepreneur.

Therefore, if you’re stuck in the grind, you might as well be yourself.

On the latest episode of the Inner Edison Podcast with Ed Parcaut, we talked about the importance of the journey and finding yourself as an entrepreneur.

We spoke with Rob Anspach, the founder of Anspach Media

He shared his journey into entrepreneurship, including his Edison moments and why it’s important to be yourself.

Rob’s Edison Moment

Rob believes in the power of learning from good and bad experiences.

He shared his experience of diving head first into entrepreneurship back in 1988.

At that time, he took out a ten thousand dollar loan from a relative to start a video photography business.

With inflation, that would be like $100,000 today.

He brought in a partner that was very good with the technical side of the business, but he couldn’t sell.

It wasn’t long before his business partner split town with half of the technology.

That was followed up by calls from angry customers asking about their videos.

In truth, Ron didn’t know what was going on.

The business folded, and he was left to find a way to repay the loan to his relative.

It taught him a valuable lesson about starting a business.

Learning From Expensive Lessons!

It took him six more years before he would start another business — this time, on his own.

Rob’s next venture was created out of something he knew — carpet cleaning.

Starting a business in a niche he knew something about helped him become  more successful than his first venture.

He admits that while his carpet cleaning business was successful, he had an Achille’s heel that was holding him back from earning more

Then, out of the blue, he received a flyer in the mail in 1998.

Little did he know then, but this flier would change the trajectory of his entrepreneurial journey.

He took a chance with very little money in the bank and signed up for a Joe Polish marketing event.

He described himself as “minutes away from bankruptcy” at the time.

There, he learned marketing secrets that had been holding his business back for so long.

He says, “A lot of it was common sense, and I had no idea.”

Flipping The Script!

Rob’s carpet cleaning business flourished once he learned more about marketing.

However, now he had a new passion — helping others market themselves

In 2012, Rob earned a reward that helped him decide to go full-time with Anspach Media
