LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE:
Josh Cary started his first four decades, hiding his potential. It wasn’t until after a couple of failed life experiences that he realized what was holding him back — himself.
What’s holding you back?
Are you a hidden entrepreneur?
That was the theme of our latest episode of the Inner Edison Podcast with Ed Parcaut.
We interviewed Josh Cary, a business coach, creative digital and media consultant, entrepreneur, and Co-Founder of PodMax. His business helps entrepreneurs share their unique messages by coaching them and matching them with relevant podcasts in their industry.
Josh explained how he helps entrepreneurs share their message to build an on-air brand. Here’s what he had to say about the topic.
The Entrepreneur’s Podcast Trap
Josh explains that many entrepreneurs believe that all they have to do is just show up and answer a podcaster’s questions to build their brand. However, that’s not the way it works!
Even if you go on a podcast with a good draw, you can’t build a brand until people know your story. Josh adds that many entrepreneurs get podcasting interviews wrong.
That’s because many entrepreneurs don’t come to the (podcast) table understanding their:
- Core message
- Signature story
- Supporting stories
Without these elements, it’s hard to become a compelling podcast guest that compels listeners to find out more.
Reach Isn’t Enough
Josh continues that even if you can get onto a podcast with significant reach, that doesn’t matter. Reach isn’t enough!
You could spend all day long reaching people with “boring AF posts, but that won’t matter.” The same goes for being on a podcast with a good number of listeners.
The way you utilize your reach is through an impactful story or an impactful message.
Without an impactful story or an impactful message, you’ll reach people, but not where it matters most — their hearts.
You Have to Have Impact
The best way to impact any podcast, as a guest or a host, is to connect with the audience. But, unfortunately, that doesn’t happen simply by answering questions.
You have to relate to the listeners by forming an emotional connection — and the best way to do that is through telling stories.
Stories help listeners emotionally connect with you and your brand. It gives them a chance to see themselves in you.
Once listeners have an emotional connection with your story, they are more apt to buy in and listen to your message.
However, Josh is quick to explain that this isn’t the end goal.
You Must Inspire
After you’ve created an impact on someone, they may attempt to learn more by doing one of the following:
- Tune in to your podcast
- Subscribe to your email list
- Follow you on social media
That is where you can nurture your business relationship with them. You have one goal — to inspire. Once you inspire your audience, they become willing to take action.
They may:
- Sign up for a course
- Contact you for a coaching session
- Buy one or more of your digital or physical products
Without a strong emotional connection, you’re just another product. But, once your product has a story or message around it, you become a brand.
Josh explains that the good news for entrepreneurs is that anyone can learn this skill. You just have to have the right tools in place and the right coach to mentor you along your journey.
