LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE:

Starting an online business can be a scary process. There are a lot of things that go into making an online business successful. Chief among them is having the knowledge or skills that people desire.

Do you have a passion project you’ve been considering turning into a business?

If so, you won’t want to miss the latest episode of the Inner Edison Podcast with Ed Parcaut

We spoke to Jonathan Milligan, a blogger, speaker, and online business coach who helps people turn their passions into businesses.

He shared the six levels of a successful online business. Stick around to learn more about how to turn your passion into a platform

1. Discovering Your Message

Jonathan states that discovering your message is the all-important first step. In order to ignite your message, you need three things:

  1. People
  2. Purpose
  3. Passion

You need to choose a specific audience to receive your message. It could be stay-at-home moms, wealthy entrepreneurs, or people who love to knit. The most important thing is that it should be a group that resonates with your message.

Your purpose is how you show up best for others. Do you love to be on camera, or would you rather teach through a blog? Figuring out your strongest attributes for business will help you gain traction faster.

Passion is all about getting clear on what problem your people have that you’re passionate about solving for the next two to five years.

2. Launching Your Platform

After you’ve discovered your message, it’s time to launch your platform. You’ll want a visual representation of your business online.

In most cases, this would be a website, but it could also be a blog, vlog, or some other format, like a course.

You’ll want to decide if you’re a better:

  1. Writer
  2. Speaker
  3. Teacher
  4. Coach

Depending on which is your strongest platform will ultimately decide how you launch.

3. Create the Community

Once you’ve created a platform, you have to create your community. There are two paths that we teach in Market Your Message, and they are:

  1. The Social Community
  2. The Content Path

The social community leverages social media to build a community online. The content path is about growing a community around a blog, podcast, YouTube channel, etc.

4. Building Your Authority

Jonathan’s favorite way to build authority is to write a book. That’s because it’s the fastest way for a person to say, “This person’s an expert”.

Another way to build authority is to create an online course where people can learn from you and build your credibility.

Both paths help establish your authority.

5. Creating Your Funnel

In marketing terms, Jonathan says this would be called an acquisition funnel. An acquisition funnel is set up for one purpose, to have constant leads.

When you set up a free book funnel, it helps build a relationship where the person reads your book, gets on your email list, and becomes intrigued by other offers, like a course or coaching.

In Jonathan’s experience, one out of ten people who opt-in for the book will book a call, and out of those, one in four will purchase a big-ticket offer.

That’s the model that he teaches in Market Your Message.

6. 1,000 Customers

After setting up your funnel, your goal is to reach 1,000 customers. If you can build a funnel with 1,000 customers, you can build a profitable online business.

It only takes 1,000 customers to buy $100 worth of offers from you each year to make a six-figure income.
